Story: Western Australian Pears
Episode: Episode 2
Presenter: Stuart Laws
Air Date: 24th April 2022
- West Australian Pears are picked through the autumn and available all year round as sweet, juicy snacks.
- Donnybrook is a key area for pear orchards in WA. Choosing to eat locally grown produce in season provides excellent produce and great value whilst supporting local farmers.
- There are so many great Pear varieties to choose from to provide a choice of colors, flavors and textures – such as Packham, Bartlett, Beurre Bosc, Corella, Josephine, Red Anjou, Winter Nelis, and Red Sensation.
- Pears ripen from the inside out, and while some varieties change color when ripe, others show little or no change in color.
- To check if a pear is ripe, press the flesh gently near the stem – if the flesh gives a little, the pear is ripe and ready to enjoy.
- If you like a sweet, crunchy pear, it can be eaten straight away. If you like a softer pear, then leave it for another day or two. To speed up the ripening, you can leave them in a fruit bowl with bananas or apples.
- Pears should be stored at room temperature to allow them to ripen. Once ripe, they will stay fresher and last longer if stored in the fridge.
- Good things come in pears, like good gut nutrients and fiber.
- Boost your mood and choose a pear the next time you are looking for a delicious snack or a nutrient-rich addition to any meal.
- Pears are a great source of fiber, containing both soluble and insoluble fiber to support gut health.
- Pears have a low GI, providing a sustained source of energy for the body.
- There’s a lot of antioxidant and phytochemical goodness in the skin of pears – so eat with the peel on.
