Stuart heads to Fremantle and uncovers the historic tale Moon Chow and his wife Mary, all whilst under the roof of the former Fremantle lock-up.

  • Moon Chow, the first documented Chinese settler in Western Australia, and his wife Mary arrived in Fremantle in 1829. Moon Chow established himself as a skilled carpenter and boat builder.
  • Moon & Mary is housed in the Old Fremantle Lockup, formerly a holding cell for petty convicts. The venue preserves the original structure, with prison cells converted into private dining rooms and the old recreation yard transformed into a beer garden.
  • Moon & Mary offers a fusion of Southeast Asian flavours with fresh, local ingredients. The menu, crafted by Group Executive Chef Aldren Teo and Singapore-born Zane Morrison, caters to both casual bar snacks and full dining experiences.
  • Best Behaviour is the lively bar at Moon & Mary, with creative cocktails, premium beers, and a diverse wine selection. The in-house distillery produces exclusive gin and vodka.
  • The Rec Yard, formerly the men’s exercise yard, features preserved convict etchings and offers a relaxed, casual atmosphere. It’s a great spot for unwinding or socialising with friends.
  • The Dining Room provides a chic setting for modern dining with a focus on Southeast Asian flavours. It’s ideal for date nights or special celebrations, complemented by an extensive drink menu.
  • Former prison cells are now private dining and spirits tasting rooms, maintaining their original doors and walls to preserve the authentic atmosphere.
  • The story of Moon & Mary reflects the rich cultural influences shaping Western Australia’s food culture. From Greek and Italian to Portuguese and Asian influences, these diverse cultures contribute to the state’s vibrant dining scene.
